23-03-2009

The last Thameslink route service from Moorgate drew more than 250 spectators and raised over £700 for street children's charity Railway Children on Friday, March 20.

Rail enthusiasts and commuters alike turned out for two final runs: the scheduled 19.06 Moorgate to Bedford train and an additional commemorative service put on by First Capital Connect (FCC) at 19.54 to Farringdon, St Pancras and Kentish Town.

A countdown clock checking the last hours, minutes and then seconds to the 19.06 proved popular with photographers as did the 19.54 eight-carriage train decked out in Thameslink Programme livery.

Commemorative headboards announced the final 'Farewell to Moorgate' run and commemorative tickets were handed out in exchange for donations to charity. Ticket numbers 001, 319, 377 and 600 (the last ticket) were auctioned off on the platform. In total, £707.35 was raised.

FCC Managing Director Elaine Holt joined the crowds commemorating the end of the Farringdon to Moorgate branch line that has been in operation since 1868.

She said: “I think that, with the help of the crowds of well-wishers, we gave the Moorgate Thameslink route branch line a fitting send-off on Friday night.

“It was an occasion tinged with sadness and perhaps some nostalgia but it’s also an exciting time for the future of the Thameslink route and our customers.

“The Thameslink Programme will transform the service we can give people, reducing overcrowding by introducing new and improved trains, stations and platforms. The new timetable of 22 March has already doubled the length of up to 12 of our rush hour services, providing 2,800 more seats across the morning and evening peaks.”

Dave Ellis of Railway Children said: “Last Year Railway Children were able to help 25,571 children in India, the UK and East Africa,  who would without our help would have been completely alone and vulnerable on the streets.

“It is only because of such fantastic support from companies such as First Capital Connect and the enthusiasm and support of the employees within, that we are able to continue and grow this work and for that everyone at Railway Children is incredibly grateful.”
