The new generation of crowd-busting 12-carriage trains is a key element of the Thameslink Programme. Bids by Bombardier Transportation and Siemens to build and maintain the new fleet are being clarified and negotiated.
The successful bidder also needs to provide depots for the maintenance of the new fleet and in preparation for this, plans for base schemes at two sites have been published. One, a new depot south of London, near Three Bridges station, was approved by Crawley Borough Council on 16 November 2009. The other, close to Hornsey depot in north London, is still under consideration, by Haringey Council.
