PM and Chancellor view Blackfriars

24-03-2010

Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Chancellor of the Exchequer Alastair Darling visited Blackfriars station works on the morning of the March 2010 budget.

Blackfriars visit: Alastair Darling and Gordon Brown enter the work site

The two toured the site and were shown how the project will transform the station, paving the way for new longer 12-carriage trains and providing better connections with the Tube.

The PM and Chancellor met site workers in the canteen before viewing the track protection shield over the District line (that allows work to continue without disturbing the Underground), the site of the new station and then the site from the Blackfriars road bridge.  They then walked through the main station concourse and onto the worksite beyond to view the works from bridge deck level.

Both were impressed with the scale and complexity of work under way and that, despite this, train services are still running.

This was also covered on the Number 10 website.
