Plans to rebuild Bedford station have been put on hold in the interests of ensuring the Thameslink Programme delivers best value for money to taxpayers. This is particularly important in the current economic climate.
Provision of the much-needed and long planned increases in capacity for passengers at Bedford will continue but the Government has decided to defer some non-critical works that would have added operational flexibility.
Platforms 1-3 will still be lengthened to 12 carriage capability but by using the north sidings to turn trains, neither the planned platform 1a nor a new station building are needed to meet the capacity increases planned from 2011.
The extension to platform 1a and new station building will not be required until the completion of London Bridge works in December 2016 [since altered to December 2018].
