Alternative routes case studies

Alternative routes case studies

From Saturday 23 to Sunday 31 August 2014 no First Capital Connect or Southern services will run to, from and through London Bridge and some stations across London and the south east will be busier.

We’ve asked local workers, Fi Freeman and Don Campbell, how they will be getting to work during these service changes.

Name
Fi Freeman

Background
I work for Borough Market’s information office, which is located within the market itself. I travel in from Forest Hill to get to work, as well as using this line for meeting friends on my days off. When I have a bit more time I like to walk some of my journey, especially if the weather’s nice.

Normal route

  • Forest Hill to London Bridge

Alternative route
I can go on the London Overground from Forest Hill and connect to the Jubilee Line at Canada Water, which goes to London Bridge.

Impact of August
No direct service from Forest Hill to London Bridge

“It’s great that the station is getting a revamp, it’ll make it much easier to get to Borough Market. The Market will be open as usual at this time, and as I work Saturdays I’ll have to find an alternative route to get to work. Perhaps I’ll dust down my bike and work off any extra pounds – working amongst artisan produce and delicious ingredients can be very tempting!”

Name
Don Campbell

Background
I‘ve worked in London Bridge for seven years and lived in Honor Oak Park for four. I use Southern services to London Bridge station daily, using Forest Hill station some days and Honor Oak Park others, depending on whether I have to drop-off or collect my daughter from nursery or not.

Normal route

  • Honor Oak Park or Forest Hill to London Bridge

Alternative route

  • I can go on the London Overground from Forest Hill and connect to the Jubilee Line at Canada Water
  • Or I can walk to Crofton Park, and get a Southeastern train to Blackfriars and then walk to work from there

Impact of August

  • No direct service from London Bridge to Honor Oak Park/Forest Hill
  • Alternative routes may take longer and are busier

“London Bridge station has needed attention for years. What was the worst station in London will now be one of the very best, and with the service improvements it’s well worth some short-term inconveniences – as long as I know about it in advance and can plan around them.”
