Cambridge sidings upgrade

Govia Thameslink Railway and Network Rail are undertaking a £30 million extension of the Cambridge railway depot to help increase the number of Thameslink services available to operate to and from Cambridge.

This investment will improve cross-London rail links to and from Cambridge – from places as far afield as Brighton and Gatwick Airport, helping to boost the local economy.

The work to realise this includes:

  • building eight new 12-car siding tracks,
  • adding new servicing aprons including Controlled Emission Toilets (CET), automatic sanding and vehicle access points
  • adding a new Carriage Wash Machine (CWM)
  • a new accommodation building and control room
  • new depot signalling systems
  • relocating and rebuilding a Network Rail maintenance facility
  • knocking through an archway underneath Mill Road to help facilitate the Chisholm Trail

Temporary closure of Mill Road bridge

To complete this work we need to widen an archway underneath Mill Road to allow an additional railway line to run beneath the bridge. Unavoidably, this work will make the bridge unsafe for traffic to use while this is taking place.

To realise the long-term benefits there will be unavoidable short-term disruption and we will be working closely with the council to mitigate this as much as possible.

Road closure duration

The closure of Mill Road bridge will last for eight weeks, with six day working (Monday – Saturday) taking place for the duration of the project. We are still finalising the exact dates of the closure but following feedback from local stakeholders and residents we are currently looking at dates in July and August to help minimise the disruption this will cause to residents, university students, school pupils and local traders.
